Hi, hope this ok to ask here and correct place to ask, I just bought an iphone 3gs from my neighbor as he upgraded, but its locked to vodaphone, can i unlock on my pc using some special software or is it more sensible to just take to blokey down rd! cost around tenner

Thanks Ali

Can you not ask the neighbour to contact Vodafone who will unlock it for you? I know with O2 this is easy as pie and they don't even charge for it :)

I tried this recently with Orange. It would have been more fun sodomising myself with a cheese grater. I just hope Vodafone are a bit more useful, because Orange couldn't organise a **** up in a brewery.

if you cant do it via the network, then providing it isnt on ios 5.1, it can be unlocked via jailbreaking then installing ultrasn0w, if you get stuck msg me and i will provide you with some links

Thought Vodafone had a page where you could put the details in and they did it for free (and quickly!) though a quick google isn't bringing it up. Otherwise it should be able to be unlocked via software unless you are quite unlucky. Depends on the iOS version and more specifically the baseband version

Tute I share your pain with Orange. I had a complete nightmare with my old iPhone 4 with them and still wasn't unlocked after 6 months - i gave up. I read your posts on it previously and they also lost my application to be unlocked several times, then said it didnt complete successfully or Apple hadn't got back to them

I will be starting that suffering again soon with my 4S..

i went into vodaphone today, they told me £30 and takes 48 hrs, went to guy down the road from where i work, £15 done in half hour!!
but looking thro the phone looks like the guy jailbroke it using cydia.

if this is the case then i might play abit with this jailbrake thing adn see what i can get.

I'm probably going to want to unlock my iPhone 4 at the end of my contract later this year, but as I'm on Orange and reluctant to go through them due to the numerous horror stories, the only other option I can see for a "proper" unlock is to use a website etc. which charge anything from £40-£70 (if they are even legit).

Is there any other way, I will probably try orange first, but don't hold much hope them getting it right.

I recently had my iPhone unlocked by Orange and didnt have any problems, 10 day wait and the fee. Can't see much what they could cockup, just make sure you give them the correct Imei number.

I've had it done now by a 3rd party, I read too many horror stories with Orange so paid a bit more for less hassle. Was done in less than 48 hours too.

ignore that comment from the newb ^^ yes you can unlock it via software, google around for the info, anyone paying for this is wasting their money
