Unlocked my Desire - Sim card error

Sorry in advance if this is a typical question but I'm slightly panicking that I've got a very expensive brick in my hands.

I've just purchased a HTC Desire that was an unwanted upgrade by somebody on T-Mobile. As I'm an O2 customer I did a bit of research and found a website offering unlocking codes that seemed to have a good reputation.

I gave them the IMEI number, the network it was locked to and paid. Minutes later I received the unlock code/pin and followed the instructions to the letter, I.E Insert O2 sim, wait for the phone to request unlock pin, and enter it.

I did this and the phone went to the main screen. However in the top left hand corner there is a triangle with an exclamation mark in it and if I try and manually use the O2 network I get "Your sim card does not allow a connection to this network".

Have I made a basic mistake or is the phone still locked?

have you rebooted since you did this? Unlocking is sometimes not enough, you might have to root the phone too to be on the safe side

I've restarted it a few times now without success. I've just tried a Vodafone sim in it as well which gives me the same message.

Root the phone? Is this going to get messy?

Is there any simple way to check if the phone is actually unlocked?

Done that and it's made no difference :(

Is it because even though it's unlocked it's still running T-Mobile firmware or whatever the Android equivalent is?!?

I doubt it would fix it, its in the network settings where you choose the operator, make sure use 2g only is unticked, Ive googled and it worked for some.
If it does not work then maybe the unlock has been unsuccessful

If the unlock wasn't successful how do you unlock it again?

Obviously the screen asking for the unlock pin has gone since I entered the original pin and I can't find any other way of entering it again.

Right some people I've spoken to seem to think you need to enter the unlock pin/code twice but I can't see any obvious way of entering it a second time?!?

Probably.
AFAIK, the codes *seem* to work, but actually don't on the T-Mob firmware.
Root, flash a generic unbranded HTC firmware, and the unlock should work.

Other people have said this to me but how do you enter it twice?!?

A message on screen asked for the pin which I entered and then it went to the "home screen". There was no option to enter the code a second time and no-on seems to know how to enter it again.

Hi,

I also am experiencing the exact same problem as griff.

I was prompted to enter a code, which I got from T mobile, when inserting a non tmobile sim into my tmobile locked desire. I entered the code once, and the phone accepted it. From then on the phone stops prompting for a pin. The phone only works with tmobile sim cards.

I am going to go down to the tmobile shop and see what they say.
