I need to buy a new mobile, will probably buy the HTC one (gsm) second hand however I'm not sure how unlocking works in the US. Does anyone know how easy it is to unlock out here, as in do the networks allow it? I suspect the one cant be unlocked using a 3rd party yet.

Any Passing friendly Anericabs out there?!

Well it requires permission in the US now because a persons right to unlock expired. Are you currently in the US or outside it? The model you buy will need to be compatible with the right networks (likely but there are some edge cases), did you check if a 3rd party could unlock it or are you assuming?

I will be in the US for 2 months or so, so the law for right of unlocking has expired, that's annoying. I haven't checked if a 3rd party can unlock will ask but as the phone is new I'm guessing not?
Thanks for the help man :).

You're in the UK currently though? You'll just need to unlock your current phone, use PAYG SIM on AT&T and you'll be fine, don't buy a phone out there. If it's a work thing then get them to pay.
