Hi guys, I am planning on giving my iPhone 5 to my girlfriend soon (so I can get the 5S), however it is currently locked to Orange and she will be using Virgin.

Has anyone had any experience with the iPhone unlocking websites (where they update the Apple database to unlock it), or does anyone know if Orange will unlock it for me? I've been with them for over 6 years and had this current contract nearly 11 months.

Thanks

This is the one reason I went with O2 (other than it was the best deal by a mile). I have the option to put in a giffgaff sim.

My friend is on three, and they told her nobody could unlock iphone 5 as apple hasn't given anyone the unlock keys  I took this with a pinch of salt as I know what these call centre staff are like

Ring orange and ask?

Yeh I will do at some point, but even if they do I wouldn't be surprised if a customer service rep just says no (they are renowned for lying). Was hoping someone may have already done it before.

This looks like one of the cheapest ones I can find.

Looks kinda legit, plus if I pay with Paypal then I'm fairly protected as they almost always side with the buyer.

Why on earth would you do that?

AFAIK on O2 you pay £20 to have it unlocked within the first 12 months of your contract and after that it's free.

You are looking at spending £93 to go through ebay?

Ask Orange first ffs, it could be A) cheaper and B) free.

Just rang them, and as I bought the phone and contract from Carphone Warehouse (even though it's on Orange) they won't do it.. surprise surprise!

He did say that apparently you can go into an Apple store and they will do it for you, although I'm not sure how true that is.

EDIT: Just read this and it looks like my only option is going to be paying a horrendous amount to some dodgy looking website/seller on Ebay. Definitely moving away from Orange/EE when my contract is up.

Orange will usually unlock your phone after 12 months for £20, and it takes roughly 2 weeks - 8 weeks.

It shouldn't matter where you got the phone from as long as its on Orange network they are obliged to unlock your phone if you have been with them for 12 months.

I wouldn't bother with those illegal unlocking websites, as Apple are the only people who will provide the unlocking code when the request is made from the network provider.

You will have similar issues with O2 and Vodafone, however the process is little quicker.

Orange made it very clear that I can only have it unlocked if it was bought direct from them. May not do it at all now as it just isn't worth it.

Can't wait to leave Orange

I would phone them up again and speak to someone else. The phone is locked to Orange therefore they are the only ones who can unlock it. The device is registered to you and the registered Orange customer they are obliged to unlock it for you with or without charge.

I can't really offer any advice on top of what has been mentioned, however I can state that Apple do not unlock phones. Simple as that. I'm sure most if not all of you already knew that, but I might as well state that explicitly.

Well I thought I had read somewhere in their terms that the phone had to be purchased direct from Orange, but I can't find the link to that now. But frankly, it wouldn't surprise me if that was their policy. They are completely full of ****.

as far i was aware Virgin use the same baseband as orange and t-mobile so virgin sim shuold work in your phone same as tesco and giff gaff sims work in an o2 phone. try it out before paying huge costs.

i wouldnt use www.officialiphoneunlock.co.uk, i initially lost £79.99 with them for my iphone 5 and it was not until i raised it formally with trading standards i got a refund 6 months later. i would have bene happier with the unlock but after 5 months of waiting for something they said would take 7 working days i gave up.

use at your own risk.
