Unlocking iPhone

Sorry, but the sticky makes no sense to me. Do I need to install iTunes before I even attempt to unlock the iPhone? I switched it on for the very first time, connected it to the PC, held down power and home until the screen went black and now I can't turn it back on again.

What am I supposed to be doing?
 
I'm holding home and plugging it into my PC. I keep holding home and then I get the message in iTunes about it being in recovery mode. It tells me that I need to restore before I can use iTunes. When I click OK, the update button is greyed out and it's saying my software is up to date.

What do I do now?
