For free, as far as i know the only option is to jailbreak I'm afraid.

Jail breaking to unlock will only keep the phone unlocked while the jailbreak is on, if you were to restore the phone you would lose the unlock I think?

Just ring up Orange and pay for it. Its a total unlock and doesn't require any jailbreaking so will work on any updates from Apple
