I have an old Windows phone, and a VERY old Nokia pay as you go phone.

I use the old Nokia as a spare, it has a SIM card with £4+ on it.

I was wanting to use the Windows phone instead, as it is newer, better and you can access the web on it.

The VERy old phone has a vodaphone SIM (the one with £4 on it). The windows phone doesn't have a SIM because I transferred my (3 mobile) number into my new one when I bought it 3 years ago.

The vodaphone micro pay as you go SIM (with £4 quid on it) doesn't work in the windows phone.

Why ? Does it need to be unlocked ? Why does it need to be unlocked when it is a pay as you go SIM ? Do I need to buy a 3 mobile pay as you go SIM card for the windows phone as it was last used as a 3 mobile contract phone ? Additionally it was also originally an o2 contract phone.

Sorry if that is complicated to follow.

I don't mind buying a 3 mobile pay as you go SIMcard for a fiver if I have to, and then have 2 spare phones ...

IN summary.

The old nokia phone has always been a pay as you go vodaphone and has £4 quid in it.

The windows phone started life as an o2 but I switched to 3 mobile, kept my number, and now use this number as a 3 mobile android Samsung phone. This old windows phone has no SIM card in it, and the vodaphone SIM card doesn't work in it, but does in its "proper" phone ie the old nokia.

If the windows phone has had both O2 and 3 sims working it's surely unlocked.Does the nokia take micro or full size sim ?

The windows phone takes a micro SIM only. The older one takes a bigger card.

When I put the vodaphone card with 4 quid on it into the windows phone, it actually said the SIM card was the wrong card, or invalid etc.
