Unlucky Haswell CPU?

Currently on my new setup: GA-Z87X-D3H and I5 4670K.

I started by just base-lining, at which point, my joy faded away. So far, I've only managed to get the clock at x 42 with 1.248 Core voltage to pass Windows boot, anything else is BSOD.

Reading up, this seems to be the absolute minimum, and to say I'm quite disappointed is an understatement. Is there anything I'm missing with the overclock, or is there a way to swap the CPU out for a replacement?.
Edit: Sorry forgot to mention that at 4.2 with the above settings, 20 Intel Burn tests maxed out at 87c.

Specs Below
OS: Windows 7 Home Service Pack 1
CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K
Raijintek Themis Direct Contact CPU Cooler
Motherboard: GIGABYTE Z87X-D3H-CF
Memory: 8GB Samsung PC3-12800 - M379B5273DH0-YK0 PC3 / 11.0-11-11-28
GFX: GIGABYTE Radeon HD 7870

Logged back in to my main account, so sorry for any confusion with my original post under Bamz. Anyhoooo

Right, so, stable at 4.2 / 1.27v
Max Temp on IETU was 75c, so I have 10c to play with (I reckon)

Anything over x42 it just fails at Windows loading etc even if I increase to 1.28/9, so there seems to be something else holding back the ability to increase the multiplier.

I have read the guides, quite a few of them, but I'm still not seeing a core set of settings that I need to play with that can help me increase the multiplier.

Any thoughts (other than how dumb I am probably sounding right now)

I keep reading about Vrin etc, but none seem to refer to my BIOS/Z87X-D3H.
Anyone know what that setting is, as I need to change it to 1.9/2.0

Thanks

Think I may RMA it. General consensus seems to be 4.2 at 1.3v is a complete dog. I agree based on the weight of evidence out there. Shame :(

I doubt you can RMA it, it's not faulty.

If you're within time you can return it under the Distance Selling Regulations or 14 Day Satisfaction Guarantee.

I find it curious that your instability appears whilst you're loading windows before you start putting the CPU under load. Are you using a negative voltage offset or any other settings that might reduce voltage under low load?

RMA'ing a chip because it's a bad clocker is lame....

You lost the silicon lottery, sell it and buy another or deal with what you have.

Why, its sold as a 'K', meaning overclock. If its considered that 4.2 is a dog, would you be happy?. Don't quite get what's 'lame' about it, unless you've got £167 to throw around, which I don't.

Which your chip does as it's unlocked and Intel does not a set minimum overclock. As others say you can't RMA it just for that but DSR.

Overclocking is NEVER gauranteed. However at stock it's a 3.4GHz chip so even if it only went to 3.5GHz it's still achieved an overclock.

Quite agree with Space Monkey. Just because it's a "k" series doesn't guarantee a certain overclock. 4.2ghz is a 800mhz overclock so it's fulfilled it's overclocking capability. You have just lucked out with this particular cpu.

Why have you got 2 accounts? Pretty sure that's not allowed on here.

Who guaranteed more than 4.2? And you have overclocked it, so it's lived up to the 'K' part ;)

Cannot argue with that. You've managed to overclock from stock!! Haswell has been known as a bad overclocker compared to its predecessors, one reason I'm sticking with my 2500k.

I wouldn't if bought Haswell to begin with... It's a dog of a clocker.

4.2Ghz is a decent clock as many people have got worse.

I hope you RMA/DSR this and you get a even worse chip.

Some people

..

It's my job to help the moderating team, and having 2 accounts is against the forum rules, so I've reported it to the mods to sort as they see fit, nothing personal at all :)
