I went up to Birmingham and back yesterday and saw a black, maybe very dark grey, 08 plate Golf GTI with flashing blue lights and siren. It past me twice whilst I was on the M40, I assume it pulled off and came back onto the motorway somewhere ahead of me.

No real issue as I wasn't speeding but the car didn't particularly look like it was an actual unmarked police car. Only had a few flashing blue lights at the front, nothing at all at the back end. So I was wondering whether this was actually an official unmarked car or someone just chancing it. If so it did work, everyone moved out of its way pretty quickly.

Anyone else seen this car about? I can't recall exactly where I was on the M40, maybe between Warwickshire and Birmingham heading North.

Kind of the point for an unmarked car, yes? :D

Just because you didn't see all the lights didn't mean there weren't any, led technology means they can be very discrete. The front and rear lights are often switchable anyway, you can choose which your have turned on (front/rear/guard mode etc), apart from which sometimes they break.

Some high ranking ambulance staff have blue lights on their own plain cars as well, in case of major incident.

:D I appreciate the fact it's unmarked and like that so they do blend in. You are right in that I expect to see a little more inside them, second rear view mirror, box on rear parcel shelf etc. That's mostly why I was thinking it didn't really look like one.

I had nothing to fear as the Skoda Rapid I was given by my company to drive up to Brum in was anything but rapid :D

Parting traffic on a motorway, no need for rear lights. It only serves to confuse motorists behind said vehicle.

Some unmarked cars have absolutely nothing visible. No 2nd rear view mirror, no additional external aerials, no equipment in the cabin (It's all hidden). You would not be able to discern it from a regular vehicle unless it was stationary and you were 2 foot from it.

There was a convoy of unmarked cars and a biker rolling down the road when I finished work the other day with their blues on, just tiny little leds in the grilles.
If they weren't on they'd have looked totally standard.

Last unmarked car I saw was a 15 plate S3 in silver, on the M25. It had pulled someone over. :)

I doubt the Police would be running an 08 GTI, but I might be wrong...

Driving along the M8 near Glasgow airport one day I saw an unmarked VW Caddy can pull a car over. Flashing lights buried in the grill etc. Strangest unmarked police I have ever seen, and yup two traffic cops got out.
