**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

Wouldn't worry too much - although mismatched both tyres are going to have fairly similar performance. (even a new AS2 would have slightly different performance to an already slightly worn tyre)

Surely there's a middle ground between those two - e.g. whats wrong with CSC5 or F1A2 ? (4x CSC5's @ £360, or F1A2 @ £325 vs £300 for rainsports @ Blackcircles prices)

Cool, thanks for replying. :)

Completely agree that the tyres mentioned above are both superior tyres. But between Camskill and tyre leader the rainsports are in @ £205 for a set (A mate to do the fitting). GYAS2's which I had on my SLK come in at around £275 and CSC5's at around £310. So really it's about the Value.

Are the SC5 and the AS2's that much better? Well the RS3's get a good write up, even though there is a rather large following with them being 'the best tyres ever omglolz', but they can't be that bad right?

I've got a set of rainsport 3s as they were £90 a corner cheaper than the CSC6/MPSS. They seem better in every way than Pirelli P Zeros or Dunlop Sport Maxx's, but the sidewalls feel softer than the latest UHP tyres such as the MPSS. They're extremely progressive and don't lose grip easily - when they do start to go, it's very easy to control.

There's no question most UHP tyres are better, particularly if you've got a little sports car you're throwing around B roads, but in a big powerful saloon traction off the line is what you want, and the rainsports seem very, very good at that.

I was originally planning on getting a set of MPSS, but as I'm not sure what country I'm moving to (if at all) after uni, I didn't want to spend an extra £350-£400 only to sell the car in a couple of months.

Any recommendations for a tyre at 215/45/17 for an MX5?

Was going to buy 4 x Rainsport 3's @ £205, but was wondering if stumping up for something like the Yokohama V105s @ £300 was worth the extra cash.
Cheers.

Where are you looking at 4x Rainsport 3's for £205 and V105's for £300 please? :)

That is the same size I need.

I don't mean to be a pedant, but the RS3's are nearly £225 including post, which is the same as Tyreleader :D

Thanks though, browsing Camskill now... Haven't poked about on here before! Really horrible site, but decent prices! :)

My bad, I thought it said Inc P&P not +P&P!

Is there such a thing as a best of the budget tyres? Got two tyres on mine with roughly 4mm left and since I'm looking to trade car in after the summer, I don't want to spend a lot on a replacement pair. Thought I'd just put a budget pair on in the £30-£40 (each) range for time being. Work is 5 mile away so it's not like I'll be driving long distance on them everyday. Got a pair of F1A2's on rear already for when weather is really bad.

Swap front for the backs?

How much tread have the F1A2's got on?

Im slightly confused, if there is 4mm of tread left, then just dont bother changing them and use them. changing at 4mm seems a bit OTT.

+1 seems like the easiest solution

Don't think it is the fact of wanting to change @ 4mm, but how best to keep some tread on the tyres pre trade in, and minimise either the cost of new tyres or losing out on trade in value (As generally tyres are one of the easiest things a dealer will look for when assessing trade in value, and can make more money on)

True budget tyres are almost always crap. Depends on what sort of car it is though, but there are some brands which seem to be getting close to premium performance with low/mid range price. Uniroyal rainsport is one thats heavily praised and can be very cheap in the right size. Vredstein make some UHP tyres, which dont match the Contis and Goodyears but dont cost the earth either.

I'm also curious about the Hankook Ventus S1 Evo 2 - group tests of that are putting it very close to the SC6, F1AS2, MPSS etc

The new Hankook S1 Evo 2 have a near flawless performance in the wet. They grip well and are backed by predictable behavior on a winding road. Though the laps are slightly slower than Goodyear and Conti, the tyre has excellent control, with an excellence resistance to aquaplaning rounding out the wet performance. Slightly weaker in the dry, the performance is average, with good grip ruined by a snappy on-the-limit style and comparatively high noise and low comfort. An excellent choice for those who gives priority to safety on a wet road.

They're not budget but are a good bit cheaper than premium brands - would be interested to hear if anyone here has used them

I had those Hankooks - they were an excellent tyre (OEM fitted to Mercedes now IIRC) but they did wear quite quickly. I'm not sure if that was the tyre's fault, or just my car/driving style though, as I'd never tried any other tyre on this car before getting them.

Help!

Got 4 new tyres on not too long ago now, however recently (not by me) both the passenger tyres sidewalls have become damaged.

Now I'd like to get these replaced, but what would be the best thing to do as it's only the front and rear passenger side tyre. I don't want to end up with uneven tyre wear...

Post up a picture of the damaged tyres. How much tread have the drivers side tyres got? What car is it? How many miles have the tyres been on? What tyres have you got on?

I'll post a picture soon, drivers side approx 5.5mm left and it's a Mazda 6 and tyres maybe done approx 3k

All 4 are Maxxis Victra Sport VS-01.

Ordered a set of Sport Contact 6. £606 inc shipping and £64 cheaper than the Supersport which IMO are a bit overpriced. I fancied trying out Contis as have never had a set before.

Now I really should have had the alloys done AFTER getting new tyres :o

A full set of 19" MPSS is £625, CSC6 is £564 in my sizes (225/35/19 and 255/30/19). I genuinely don't know what to order :(
