**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

Halfords have the SC5 in my size (225/45/17 XL) a lot cheaper than I've seen elsewhere too - £79.99 a corner. Will be doing that next time I need a set if they're still that price - it's not a promo or anything as far as I'm aware

Interesting, they have the same for mine cheaper than I've seen too !

I do have to drive 30 miles to the nearest one but that's not the end of the world.

Edit, I think the Michelin Cross Climate XL seems to be the most preferred tyre for my size from a quick google ? Good grip in wet and dry, good in snow even, quiet and longevity. It really does seem to tick all the boxes.

It's also a smaller tyre with the drop to a 40 profile so your speedo will be over-read a bit more with it showing 70mph you would be doing 66mph-ish which isn't a massive issue.

Its only -2.3% so 70mph is 68.39mph, to get it equal I'd have had to go for a 255/40R18 which would probably have rubbed on the shocks without spacers.

I can live with a 1.6mph difference, the 225/50/17 winters were only -0.4%

First motorway drive on the CSC6 today, what a difference. No road noise and pss like dry confidence all round, maybe even better but wasn't pushing it.

The comfort alone has made them well worth it.

Not convinced these are worth it. They just end up giving you medicore performance all year round rather than good performance for 364 days and no performance on 1 day when it might perhaps snow maybe.

I can see where your logic comes from but the reviews thus far really defy that thinking.

Will wait for some more official tests.

I bet none of the reviews compare them with tyres like the SportContact 5.

I have not seen a single test that compares them against anything other than other All Season tyres.

I'd have to agree now that I'm home and have sat and looked properly! Good UHP > Decent to good all season tyres.

Also, to add to the CSC6 impressions, the drive back from Heathrow today saw torrential rain earlier, worse visibility than heavy fog. On the CSC6 I could feel the friction across the road surface whereas with the PSS this isn't something I could feel.

Very impressed. Contender for beating the AS2 for performance<>value IMO. Just gotta see how the tread wear life is compared to the AS2 to be 100% sure on that thought.

AS3 not available in my size :( Any doubt I had about the CSC6 are now buried totally though.

Evo had a brief review a couple of months back where the Crossclimate was compared to a couple of non UHP summer tyres (as well as all season and full winters) and it came out very well.

It isn't designed to be compared to CSC5 or 6s or AS3s, but does compare well to the tier below.

I think that's exactly the point - it's priced at more than a UHP, but for the majority of the year, the UHP tyres will outperform it.

Winters for most of the British population are wet, not snowy. So the best tyre is one which performs best in dry and above freezing wet conditions, which is a summer UHP tyre. Many casual reviews would have you believe the cross climates would perform like a UHP tyre but the reality is that it's a compromise for 99.9% of the time.

If you're in the northern parts of the country where you'd benefit from a winter tyre for some months of the year, there are still more months where it's above freezing so you're still accepting reduced performance for the majority of the time - I'd prefer a set of winter tyres on spare wheels if I lived in those climates

Obviously I was coming from RE050A to the CSC6s I now have rather than from MPSS like mrk, but I couldn't be happier with these tyres.

The Bridgestones would start to scrub out (in the dry) at moderate speeds around long fast bends (think motorway speeds around motorway roundabouts), whereas the CSC6s are planted at similar speeds in the wet.

I had a full geometry setup done on the RE050A and this wasn't changed at all when I swapped the CSC6s on and, probably unlike most people who change tyres, I wasn't comparing very worn with brand new - my RE050As came off with over 5mm of tread remaining.

They are a lot quieter than the RE050As and the comfort was always going to be massively superior when ditching the RFTs, but they seem very compliant without sacrificing too much turn-in. I've definitely lost some turn-in but that is a truly worthy sacrifice.

For completeness, it is worth saying that I took my car around the Evo Triangle over Easter in truly horrendous rain and wind. I didn't have any understeer or oversteer "moments" and traction out of the corners was excellent, rarely if ever spinning up the rear wheels despite being in the most aggressive gearbox mode/throttle map and really going for it. Confidence levels are just absolutely sky high with these tyres in the wet which is quite important given how much it rains in this country!

Any recommendations for the odd tyre sizes on my CLS?

Front - 245/40/R18
Rear - 275/35/R18

I've been looking around and its the rears are problem I can get CSC5s on the front but not the rear only CSC3s ideally i want matching all round.

If i want performance and matching all round i am quite limited it seems

Best options look to be

Michelin Pilot Super Sport
Michelin Pilot Sport 4
Goodyear Asymmetric 2

Looks like CSC5 is the standout UHP tyre in my size 205/50/17. Still intrigued by Crossclimate though mainly because it rated with lower noise.
