I recently reinstalled XP Pro on my desktop and now a folder of my work that I labelled as private on the previous install is now unopenable "access is denied." I think I'm using the same XP login name as before, I'm the only user and admin.

Is there anything simple I can do in XP or do I have to boot to command prompt and change the flags on this folder? Would that work? I'm guessing.... help!

right click, properties, security

If your username is listed, click it, tick the allow boxes
Otherwise click advanced
Click Add, type in username, click ok
Untick inherit, tick replace box below it
Click ok
wait
you should be able to get it

n.b. you may have to turn off simple file sharing, go to any folder, tools->options->view, its the last option

Thanks man! Missed your help somehow when you posted but got it now. Was thinking along those lines, but was the simple filesharing gubbins that was needed!

Have a beer on me.
