Unraring

I unrar a lot of files each day, and it seems very slow at doing it.

I have the current spec -

Opeteron 146 @2.8ghz
2gb ram
80gb hitachi sata-2 drive
2 x 250 hitachi sata-2 drives

Unraring an average film (4.5gb ish) takes around 5mins.

Surely there are techniques to make this faster?

Is it mainly down to the hard drive cache buffer etc...?

Thanks,

Andy

Hi Aruffell,

If you're using WinRAR try using something like 7zip, I use that and although I don't usually unRAR files greater than 400MB it does those in a matter of seconds (7zip says it's expanding them at up to ~20MB/s)

Hope that helps,

Banjo ;_;

Make sure that your temp location is on the same partition as the place you are extracting to. Stops the copying time at the end of the extract.

I also found having the pagefile on a HDD on a different controller (from that which the actual zipped file was on) speeded up the unzipping process quite considerably. :)
