Hi guys,

Looking at a laptop for a non-technical mate who literally just uses it for email and Internet. The other day after, since a Windows 10 update his system has slowed right down... I've looked at everything but I just can't seem to improve things?

The machine is virus/spyware free according to all the checks ,I've checked the disk etc. all good. The main sign now that something is up is the fact the Firefox and Chrome refuse to start. Both appear in Task Manager briefly, Firefox before it disappears and Chrome loads a blank window :(

Edge is fine.

Any ideas?

Do a clean install of Windows 10 and see how it goes with that. Didn't have to with most PCs that I updated from 7/8/8.1 to 10, but there was a couple that did have issues afterwards (performance, apps not opening properly, etc), and a clean install fixed it all.

Did MS also 'fix' any drivers eg Graphics. although, it seems unlikely that that would not impact edge too.

If you start the browsers on the command line do you get a diagnostic (nothing is event log ?)

I seemed to get this today out of the blue with Chrome. Was working on a presentation for work and was trying to open an image from a Google search. Left click on the image did nothing although the image would open fine in another tab with a right click. I tried the same page and image on Edge and there were no problems. Performance on Chrome today has been very sluggish but only when searching images and trying to interact with. Tried lots of things including cleared the cache, resetting the application, uninstalled and reinstalled and still having the same problem. Recently reinstalled W10 and all had been going smoothly. Baffled now what the cause is.

all the google search images have tracking links on them so maybe google server was slow on the re-direct ?
that's why I use an app to strip them in ff - speeds things up. (they are watching ;))

Everything back to normal today...and I didn't change a thing. Maybe Google servers were having an off-day yesterday. Strange one.
