as it says basically. there's an unsecured access point somewhere near where i live and i was wondering is it possible to message the user via their router?

This has come up before, I think most people just said to leave it.

Is the name anything revealing or just a stander 'Belkin54g' etc. ?

Depends on the area you live in but I would just leave it alone

Last time I found an unsecured AP, I managed to log in to the router. From there I got their email address.

Or possibly send them a message on their screen via cmd, if you know their computer name or IP. You can do this using:

Net Send [ip or name] "message"

I think.

Possibly abuse this and send weird messages (not condoning such action but could be fun)

Pretty sure that wont work on anything post XP SP1 unless they have gone out of their way to turn messaging service on.
