Unstable following CPU and motherboard upgrade

Sounds like a BIOS issue to me, not giving the correct auto settings for it to function with Turbo Boost on.

I can't imagine it being the CPU? Surely the 4790K should all be able to run with Turbo Boost on?

I wonder if it just effects Gigabyte's Z97X-UD5H motherboard, is yours the black version? I guess they use the same BIOS anyway.

Sounds like it's an iffy multicore turbo implementation (1 core turbo applied on all 4 cores simultaneously). Looks like its fixed in a bios update going from that tomshardware thread?

Its the non-black version. I'm not sure if the bios is the same - the revisions are differently numbered on the black, but have the same description, size and date for the most part, so I'm guessing so. I suspect you are correct about it not being the CPU - Going by the thread you linked, I think its the boards implementation of turbo boost.

eddyr - Agree, but sadly the bios update doesn't fix it. It stops it being an immediate power off, but it still dies after a minute or less of stress testing, as long as turbo boost is still enabled.

Thats a shame that it does that, means you're not getting the best out of your chip at stock :( At least you now know you don't have to RMA and just have to wait until another bios update is released!

OR can get a different cpu cooler and do some overclocking :D
