I'm going to be building a intel quad/i7 gaming pc soon to max out games with a smooth fps.

The monitor I might be getting is 22" at 1680 x 1050 or 1920 x 1080.
I was thinking about a 4870x2, but do you think it would be overkill for those resolutions? Some of my friends have been telling me that I should get a 260 gtx 216 because I wouldnt see no difference?
 
4870X2 would be more at home @ 1920x1080, so don't bother if you're only running 1680x1050. A 260 would be OK for either, but if you can afford it and you're running 1920, get the X2.
