Unsure about my temps

Ok, so new build, E6850 at stock on Abit IP35 with TT 120 Extreme.

If I check temps in BIOS at boot-up, it says 32C for CPU. If I then it boot into Windows and immediately load Coretemp it reports around 22-24C, so about 8-10C lower than the BIOS. This can't be right can it?

At this point in time the CPU is Speedstepping down to 2Ghz (6x multi).

If I then load Orthos and let it rip, the speed obviously jumps back to 3Ghz immediately but the temps in Coretemp are weird. They'll jump instantly from 22/24C up to about 36C and then climb steadily to a peak of 41C. When I stop Orthos, they'll drop instantly back to the mid-twenties.

What on earth is going on? I'm confused as this is the first C2D system I've built and TAT won't run (see other thread) so I have nothing else to check temps with. Please help :(

Yeah thought I'd seen something along those lines somewhere (search appears disabled right now).

Need temps I can trust to make sure everythings ok and sinks are mounted correctly etc.

EDIT: If the real temps are 15C higher than I'm seeing in CoreTemp then this suggests an idle of around 37C with a load of around 56C, which seems very high for a stock E6850 with a 120 extreme - worried I've done something wrong now which is why I need temps I can trust.

EDIT2: Just taken the side off the case which dropped temps quite a bit (think I need more exhaust fan power) and the Abit EQ thing was throttling the CPU fan to 50%. When I upped this to full speed the CoreTemp temps dropped to 12C idle and 31C load which equates to 27C and 46C, does this sound more reasonable?

EDIT3: Looking around it appears all the new G0 steppings have this mis-read problem - what I'm loving is the number of numpties proudly posting their uber-cool temps which have the processor cooler that the ambient temperature. Did these idiots not go to school? :D

for me, at idle with 1.48vCore (actuall) @ 4.0ghz temps are as follows

TAT 22~
Coretemp 24~
Speedfan (Cores 1/2) 24~
speedfan CPU temp 41~

under load (TAT 100% both cores, drop 5-6 of everything for Orthos)

TAT 52~
Coretemp 57~
speedfan (Core 1/2) 57~
speedfan CPU temp 68~

This is watercooled and stable, if im adding 15c then my load temps would be triggering auto sutdown surely?? its been stable like this for a few days (since new mobo), including some heavy benching + lots of game time and a good few hours under TAT

ambient temps are usualy 17~19

I'm sure you could have expressed your point a little more politely!
Sorry, was intended jokingly, hence the smilie on the end :)

Well I've now got it at 3.6Ghz (400x9) at 1.37v and it seems stable so far (not done a thorough test but it's Orthos stable for an hour). Load temps are around 47-48C which would equate to 62-63C in reality - does that sound right?

62/63 doesent sound right imo

All of the temps i listed in my earlyer post when u look at them do apear "normal", i cant see them all being 15c short. 39c idle? 72c load? hardly.

otherwise ive been running TAT for 2hours with CORE temps at 72c.

wich is rather implausable, it probably wouldnt last for 1 minute like that.

(i trust Coretemp/speed fan more than TAT for temps, as TAT readings fluctuate far too much - ie solid 100% load, temps do no jump randomly between 45-52 every "tick")

I don't know what to believe any more. Everything I've read seems to suggest that all temps for the G0 steppings are under what they should be. Using Coretemp, the T-junction is reported at 85C whereas someone said it shouldbe 100C, thus leading to the "15C out speculation".

Anyway, according to CoreTemp my CPU is idling at or below room temperature so there's no way it can be right. Whilst 62/63C does seem rather warm, it's by no means implausible.

Wish I knew what to believe as the temps reported by CoreTemp are obviously wrong and TAT doesn't work for me.

72°c will not kill your pc after 1 minute... mine will hapily run at 80°c + for hours.. and your cpu will start to throttle at 85°c (which theoretically means that they are safe to th is temp..) .... people have also had these running into the 90's without realising and they have been absolutely fine...

It might not be 15°c that you have to add, as it may vary slightly for each cpu, but your idle temps are definately low, so i would still suggest that the temps are not reading correctly...

You would be suprised!

Here are my temps after my rear exhaust fans packed up, machine was still rock solid, just flippen hot! :D

ok scratch the heat destroying the chip thing =D

as for "lower than room temperature" - ive never had that.

allways at least 4-6c higher

i dont like the idea of running anything over 60c tho..
