My console that I brought in March 2006 has just got 3 red lights. I have registered online with MS and linked my gamertag to my console etc and have got to the process of requesting to return my Xbox. I understand that they will email me a shipping tag but what about a box? It says in other places that they send you a box and then you get it picked up but on here in the 'my console has died' bit it just says about the label. I want to find it all out before as I'm only 16 and would get my dad to arrange delivery etc, I just want to know what we need to do before hand as it will be easier my finding out and doing it online rather then phoning up MS. What is the process then, arrange sending back, get label and they send you a box, then you pack it up and arrange to get it picked up? Thanks.

I think you phone up, get emailed the label and you have to sort your own box out (not the original box!). Could have changed though.

So I have to get my own box??? And it can't be the original box it came in??? Where do they think I will get a perfectly sized box with enough cushioning to make sure my 360 gets there in one piece??? Luckily my dad owns a company that builds industrial computers so has some perfect sized foam padded boxes for shipping their machines in :D.

The above post is a joke, I was not moaning about how they don't supply a box, I was commenting on how a perfect sized box is immediately available to me, god.

Post Office/stationers, like most people...

You can use the original box, but it's not advised as you probably wont get it back.

Just get your own box to be honest (dont use your original box). They sometimes turn up with one, but more then often dont bother.

Microsoft arrange for a courier to pick it up and eventually drop it back off to you. The label they send you contains all your information that the courier and repair center need to know and should be stuck on the outside of the box.

This is what I was told to do a year ago so I've no idea whether its any different now though.

Why would that matter? There's only one box I hope I get back. I've been waiting for my Xbox to break so I could get a new one, I thought it would have broken ages ago but it kept going. Now it breaks right after GTA comes out, the only game I used my 360 for this year (it was getting boring anyway though). Thanks for the help, I'll get my dad to bring a box for it.

Doubt you will get a brand new 360 (if that's what you meant). I sent mine back twice, first tim eI got my same console back fixed, then second time I got a refurbed 360 back that was not mine... who's it was before I don't know, and prob don't want to know tbh!

Also, when they send the console back to you they put it in a perfectly sized box, keep that... cos you may have to send it back again. Hopefully you won;t be that unlucky though.

It was made on the 15/01/06 they aren't going to refurb a 2 year old console now. My console is completely ****** the power button doesn't work, the DVD won't even open anymore and now it got RROD. It is not worth refurbing a 2 year old console. By new I meanta Falcon HDMI one that isn't going to break.

Right, you will get a refurbed new falcon model I'm sure, but you won't get a brand new, unused console. Although I could be wrong, I'm not sure how MS do things now.

You'll get a non HDMI replacement.

What the ****. Seriously? Surely I will get a Falcon motherboard, which would also have HDMI? I can't see why they would send me a piece of hardware with known defects. I paid £279.99 to get it new and now you can buy a Falcon HDMI Aracade for £159.99? My mate got his replace ages ago and he got a HDMI replacement so why shouldn't I. I can't see why they would be supporting old hardware that has known defects when they could just give out Falcons and not have to deal with replacing the old motherboard refurbs they send out again. Is there something I am missing?

Oh, and as I said by new I meant a Falcon one not an actual new 360. And I'm not so worried about the HDMI, it would be nice but as long as I get a Falcon or whatever motherboard it is now to make sre it works for a long time as I definately wouldn't buy another 360 now, only thing keeping me on it is GTA at the moment, and it isn't worth selling a 360.

Depends on what they find wrong with it. If they can get away with just replacing a broken DVD drive they will do just that.

as has been said, MS will either repair your console or give you a refurb that could be anything (zephyr, falcon etc). there's no guarantee you'll get a falcon so dont get your hopes up

I assume you mean why would it matter if you didn't get the original box back? It would matter if you wanted to sell the 360 at a later time.

Lack of original packaging knocks the price off a lot of things.

I've just had to replace my 360. All I did was package it up in it's original 360 packaging (which they didn't send back unfortunately), stuck all the needed stuff on the front in a plastic wallet and called UPS to come and collect it. I left the rest to MS. It's so easy to return a faulty 360, everything is literally spelt out to you, all you have to do is read. You're 16, it's not hard to do this type of stuff. I was doing all sorts of returns at your age and younger.

Yuo can get MS to send UPS though? Well I did, I had to ask, but they arranged for UPS to come collect, they come the next day too to collect. All they do is stick a sticker on your box at the door and take it away. I certainly didn;t get a HDMI replacement... prob cos there was no such thing as a HDMI 360 then :)
