Unsure about temps

I don't know why I never played around with my fan speeds before but I started to today in an attempt to reduce noise. My problem, however, is that I'm not sure what safe temps are. I have SpeedFan running to show my temps but I didn't use it to alter the fan speeds opting for the simplicity of ASUS Fan Xpert instead. I can control the CPU and 2 intake fans which normally run at around 2100 RPM (CPU) and 1200 RPM (intakes). My temps are as follows (no fan adjustment)

System 39C
CPU 32C
Core 0 43C
Core 1 44C

What can I safely let these rise to? low 50s? Mid 50s? I have an ASUS P5Q Pro mobo and E8500 with no overclocking. Many thanks for any help you can give.

Depends on your CPU.

If you have a quick google you'll find the maximum allowable temperature for your particular CPU, and you can make a judgement as to how close to this you are getting. I believe AMD chips have lower limits than Intel ones. Core temperatures and GPU temperatures are what I keep an eye on.

As an example, the maximum allowable core temp for my i5 750 is 100C. Under load I'm hitting a maximum of 78C so I'm happy that I'm not going to cook it (my CPU is heavily overclocked so my temperature are higher than standard)
