So my 15 year old has come to stay with me, likely for the foreseeable future and certainly the next few years so this has effectively limited my time on my PC which he's been hogging every night.
So I want to build him a PC of his own. It doesn't need to have all the latest bells and whistles as he doesn't play that many demanding games but it would be nice to be able to given the choice. He enjoyed Dishonored for example, along with Titanfall but seems to spend most of his time playing Roblox with friends. A 1080 that game does not need! So here's my dilemma.
I currently have an i5 2500k @4.2ghz, 8gb ram, 250gb SSD, 1TB HDD and a KFA 980 pushing out to a 29" 21:9 LG 2560x1080. Do I use this opportunity to spend £800-£1k (cheaper is better!) on a new machine/guts of a new machine for myself and bin most of the old onto my son or do I pick up another 2500k, ram, board and a 680/780 for a lot cheaper? I have a 240GB SSD spare at the moment along with a tiny monitor (another 1080p one is no huge expense). I've never considered upgrading the 2500k with any seriousness because it still does everything I want and need, but this past year I've noticed it starting to creak a little but considering it's over five years old I'm not surprised. What say ye, oh OCUK oracles? New CPU/board/ram/AIO for myself and a lower powered card for him or stick with a 2500k setup in both machines?
