i been thinking about changing my internet provider for quite a while now because i am fed up with them, now my contract is up i'm stuck.

what i dont get is when the providers say that "bt line rental is still payable", does that mean that on top of the monthy fee you have to pay to the provider you have to pay a separate fee to BT for the line.

What it means is, you pay your line rental at £10.50/m, this is for your phone line.

Your internet provider charge you a fee on top of this for your internet connection.

Nothing changes from what you've got just now - you pay BT Retail for the voice service that comes down your line, and your ISP (who are also BT Retail) for your internet connection. If you change ISP, you just change who the latter part goes to.

Although I have mentioned TalkTalk I would strongly advise you to go nowhere near them as they are awful in both my experience and their customer ratings.

I have heard good things about UKOnline but that was a while ago and have no idea where they stand now.

Unless you go for a company that does local loop unbundling where they takeover the voice and data frequencies (e.g. UKOnline and TalkTalk)

UKO don't do the voice service either, and neither do Be/O2 or most of the other LLUers (Bulldog and TalkTalk aside).
