I've got a couple of Opteron 2378 (4core 2.4Ghz) chips lying around with the ram that goes with them - 8 x 2Gb PC2-6400 (16Gb total)...

Is it worth buying a motherboard for ~£30 and using it to render video or something or is it just scrap?

Ideas are welcome! I've basically got two of these -

In the past I used to spend silly amounts of time and effort resurrecting old bits of hardware just because they were there, only to realise over and over again that once I had (yet another) fully-functional-but-completely-obsolete machine I had absolutely no conceivable use for it in practice. What was even sillier was that I'd actually spend money (usually on eBay) to achieve these... errr... non-achievements, and they'd just sit around gathering dust and taking up space.

If you just enjoy fiddling with stuff then why not, but if I were you I'd see if I could pick up a few quid on the bay for the parts you already have, then put the proceeds plus the £30 you've already saved towards something you'd actually find useful. :)
