Well, to cut a long story short, I had a sudden problem with the internet that started a few days ago - it just wouldn't connect to the internet at all. The two main suspects were the router and the modem (Blueyonder). After many calls and having a PC repair guy (not a network expert, mind you) come around to look at it, someone at the call centre appeared to have pinpointed the problem - apparently, the modem had an incorrect frequency or something. He helped me correct it. I had, just before that, bought a new router and fitted it.

The combination of the two seemed to have solved it, and the internet worked just fine right throughout the computers in the house (two via ethernet cables and three via wifi) most of the day. However, after leaving them alone for a good few hours, I returned to find that I couldn't access the internet on one of the computers connected via ethernet, nor could I get any connection on Outlook Express on it.

However, I can access the internet just fine on the other PC connected via ethernet (this one) as well as the three wifi-connected computers in the house.

A quick check on the affected PC gives no sign of anything wrong - looking in 'Network Connections', it says that it is connected.

This is really frustrating, and threatens to bring back the considerable stress I went through the past few days.

Are you using DHCP on the affected PC ? Can you log into the new router and have a look at the logs ? Have you swapped ou the LAN cable to eliminate that ? Next time call tech support before getting someone to look at your PC, it'd have been a bit cheaper than buying a new router ;)

Well, the router was actually really bad from day one - so it was an excuse to replace it with something better :)

In the time since, I've noticed that it doesn't actually refuse to connect to the internet per se...in actuality, it seems to shut the internet off at times...maybe once a day. When it happens, I have to reset it to solve the problem.

From this, I'm guessing that it's not quite your garden variety can't-connect-to-the-internet problem...

It sounds like the lease time on your IP addresses has run out and the computers have not been reassigned a new IP. That is if you are using DHCP to give out ip addresses.
