Unusually high temps after cpu heat sink change

Hi guys,

Yet another thread about high temps after changing my cpu heat sink. I've just installed the Noctua NH-D14 on my i7 950.

This is the third time i've remounted it and each time i'm getting temps at idle higher than I was with my intel stock cooler :(

For this last mount i've used arctic silver 5 and I applied a thin line as artic silver state when mounting, this is instead of the Noctua stuff which I used before but still no difference

Here are my core tempsat idle, with no OC and about 25C ambient:

39,32,39,35C

which to me seem to be very high and a bit to varied over the cores.

It could be poor airflow but I have installed the extra 140mm fan in my case (see sig) and i've open up the side of the case and blown a fan directly into the cpu fan which makes no difference to the temps.

I'm starting to pull my hair out as why should this cooler run worse than the stock one.

Any help and suggestions would be much appreciated and thanks in advance

John

p.s. I took the plastic bit off the bottom of the cooler :p heehee

At full load using Prime blend for an hour I get temps of about 61C

The only reason why Idle temps bother me is that if it runs hotter when I just leave it on, surely its going to reduce the life of the CPU?

Thanks for the speedy response :)

John

Not really, unless your idling at 90c ~ then I would say you will be degrading the cpu, but 39c nope.

At the moment my cpu with watercooling is at 39-42c ~ across the cores.

You're over-reacting, those are normal idle temps :p. And those load temps seem fine too, bare in mind it also takes around 200 hours for artic silver 5 to cure, so you should gradually see temps fall after a while.

Noctua is one of the best CPU AirCoolers. I have one on my i7 2600k and it is idling at 26'C all cores.

My i7 920d0 used to idle at 34'C with watercooling!
