Unwinding after work

Hi folks :)

I finished my degree at uni in May and graduated earlier this month and have been lucky enough to get a full time job in something I enjoy fairly quickly. I've been working 9-5 for two weeks now and finding life very time restrictive now compared to when I was a student ... so want to start getting into a routine of coming home and making the most of my evenings and weekends.

I'm wondering what all the many full time workers on here do to unwind after work to get their mind of the busy/stressful day so I can start making use of the time I've got when I'm not working.

I'm thinking of joining my local gym to go to every couple of nights for an hour or so, and have started playing PC Games again to take my mind of things.

So, what do you like to do?

A couple of cheeky beers always help with winding down. No more required than that.

I also often have a swim, go to the driving range/play 9 holes, or play some squash. Or simply go out for some dinner with friends and/or the missus.

Very important to do something after work, but keep it varied... routine will make you too comfortable with your life and thus complacement. Unless that's what you want.

I don't work full time, but I work long hour days part time and I do hard manual work. Well its not hard work, but I don't slack off. I usually come home with plenty cuts and bruises and aching muscles.

When I don't have a night out planned, I just like to sit in my chair and fall asleep to my favorite music after stuffing my face full of food and can't move any more :)

Going to the gym is something I have considered too, I wouldn't call it "unwinding" though. Depends how physically challenging your work is.

I don't think PC games will unwind you properly although i guess this depends what sort of person you are. I would be tempted to suggest it will increase your stress levels and you may find yourself playing it until later in the evening leaving you fewer hours of sleep.

If you dont have the option of going out and socialising/having some beers with your mates in the week due to getting home late and the like, i would suggest cooking yourself a proper meal, then relaxing with two or three beers until around 8 or 9, then heading to bed to watch a film.

The meal will sort you out nutrition wise and the cooking should calm you down a little bit too. The beers will loosen you up, then it is well known that watching television later at night by yourself generally sends you to sleep if you are feeling abit tense.

P.S

In regard to the exercise, depends on what work you do really. You have to remember you ideally want to fit in food between end of work and exercise otherwise you could see yourself not eating for a long time between lunch and dinner.

Possibly 2 nights a week replace the beers with letting your food begin to digest for an hour, and going swimming or a light gym. By the time you get home you should be in a mood for bed and television. Then if you want to increase fitness you can pop to the gym for a harder workout now and then in the week, and and weekends?

Welcome to working life :)

I personally find weekends provide me with more chance to relax/unwind, there's just not enough time Monday to Friday!

You'll soon settle into a routine...

a lot of people I know that work full time like to hit the gym after work, come home and just relax on the sofa.

Sounds like a wild life tbh. :o

... I'm going to miss being a student for the rest of my life, aren't I?

In the summer months an ice cold beer and a sit down outside on the garden chills me right out.

I may then have an hour or two on the 360 or watch carp on tv.

Yes, it's a grind to retirement now. I do wonder why we bothered evolving sometimes.

Working such easy hours (try 8-7 if you want tough) you can easily do what you want after work. This could be jogging, cycling, a round of golf or just the gym (the gym is good for winter too).

I'd advise some sort of exercise before or after work because your energy levels will drop through the floor if you don't.

For relaxation I'd just read a book, one beer is okay but any more and it just becomes tedious.

I've started a placement at Caterpillar, working 8:30 till 4:45. Up at 6:50 out of the door at 8. I'm finding staying awake at work impossible but i'm fine as soon as I leave work! As for my chill out, I usually have a quick blitz of my flat, have some food and then chill out with my flat mate or go out with the other placements. Don't let work the next day stop me, gotta try and continue as normal!

Depends on your job really, people with hard labour wont have the energy to do much other than eat evening meal and sleep where as those in office/light labour jobs will probably do the gym and socialise bit.
