All the Hipers bar the 580w Type-R are good PSUs.

maybe for some, but ive had no problems with mine for around 4-5 years now. Decent overclock, long hours of gaming, folding@home, left on most of the time. Even acidentally shorted it once with a bare fan power lead touching the case while turning pc on, didnt want to switch on. gave it 2mins and everything was ok again.

i must have been lucky and got a good one

Yep, I had one of those that went pop. Luckily it didn't damage any components.

I would say though that Hiper replaced it very quickly and their RMA people were very nice. Of course I didn't use the replacement, but bought an Enermax, after hearing of all the others that died.

All Hipers use relatively cheap parts compared to the quality PSU Manufacturers non budget models from the likes of Seasonic, BeQuiet, PCP&C, Corsair, Tagen, Antec and so on.

But that doesn't mean they'll all go up in smoke, otherwise the company would have long gone bust. :)

Still there is a higher risk of other parts being damaged.

At work all the PCs (not my choice, but getting my boss to spend really money on PSUs is an impossible task) are cheapo jobs, I mean really cheap sub £10 for all, but 1. Had 3 die in the last 10 years, but cause they were low power systems (sub 100w) and the deaths were more likely old age, parts wearing out rather than due to a power spike, the PCs were ok.
