about installing TomTom Home on my laptop and subsequent problems.

Well now I'm really up the proverbial creek without a paddle.

I've restored from a previous backup, the backup restored successfully but now it gives the same error with lsass.exe. Sometimes it gets as far as the logon screen but then shuts off. Same happens in safe mode too.

It's looking like a hardware problem but I can't submit a support ticket because Rock went into receivership sometime this week and they're advising any owners not to submit any support tickets until the company has been sold to new owners. This may not happen and the company may fold. If the company folds, then my 3 year warranty is gone too. (I'm just into my 3rd year)

Basically, I'm scuppered. No laptop.
I'm going to try a fresh install of windows but I'm not hopeful. If this fails, I'll have to bin it and start afresh with a new laptop. Bu**er

The hardware failure must have been a coincidence with installing TomTom Home but....
I've only got my one desktop now so I'm reluctant to install TomTom Home on it until I get definate reassurance that it's not going to cause that machine to crash and burn too.

Just tried booting from the OS recovery disc. It got through the 'setup is loading files' stage as far as the options screen (install, repair, etc) and then the machine switched off before I could select an option.
Tried booting from the CD again, selected recovery option then it switched off.

I don't think it's an overheating problem because an image restore appears to work successfully and this takes about 20 minutes. The laptop doesn't feel any warmer than usual.
Booting from the hard drive with the restored image however fails as above and I get a blue screen when booting in safe mode (STOP 0x000000B4). I've looked this up on Microsoft's site and it relates to corrupted video card drivers in Win2000 but there's nothing listed specifically for WinXP. No help there then.

Tried booting safe mode with command prompt but it switched off before completion.
Tried booting safe mode with VGA enable option and got the lsass.exe failed to initialize error again and then it switched off.

Could it be a RAM problem?

for one, ive not had any issues installing tomtom home on any pc or laptop so as you say it has to be a coincidence, how much ram is in the laptop?

Well this is just wierd.
It's working again. I switched it off for a half hour, took the back off to check for dust, no signs of dust blocking the vents. Put it back together and it rebooted fine.

Maybe it WAS overheating - I just don't know

The stinger is the only image I could get to restore is around 2 years old (from some DVD-RW discs) with no apps installed (just a few essential utilities and personalised windows tweaks) so I've got a major app re-install session to look forward to next weekend
My latest image on DVD-RAM discs seems to be corrupted. I thought DVD-RAM was supposed to be reliable

1 GB - I've had no problems with this amount and don't feel the need to add another gig.
Thanks for the reassurance on TomTom Home :)
