980ti is the dogs currently
but after reading about Nvidas current Async/compute
and the intel and freesync news, worrying im going to waste the wedge

its sounding to me like freesync will be the standard soon no?

So with that im asking what would you do right now?

980ti because most games run no higher than DX11 which Nvidia do far better.
Async/compute doesn't matter right now because there are no DX12 games that use it and by the time it is widely used you'll be about ready to upgrade again anyway. Also, Nvidia have confirmed it will be supported in a driver update, so until that's out we don't know what the difference in performance is.

You have a good point with freesync, are you planning on upgrading your monitor any time soon? How important is freesync/gsync to you?

How long will 4GB Vram hold up on the Fury is the other question I'd be asking...

That's cute but unfortunately not true, as it's a hardware-level issue.

I would still say a 980ti is better value than a fury x tho, but I'd save my money and go big next year instead. A 390 or something is good enough until then.

I'm guessing 4gb vram would hold up as long as the DX12 issue, I think it won't really be an issue until we get more games that require that amount of ram since both those arguments can be looked at the same way. Although I'm more referring to 1080p here, if you're going 1440 / 2160 then possible better to go for the 6gb ram to be safe.

Might have all been marketing fluff but wasn't the HBM meant to slightly (I know it probably never really solved it) limit the need for as much vram? To be honest it's all probably heads and tails, probably not going to see many games needing more than 4gb for a while (as I said, not many but still worth factoring in) but if we're talking about just getting an upgrade later on anyway then it's not going to be that big a deal. 4gb vram more likely to be an issue sooner though but the freesynch helps.

Even without async compute the nvidia cards are much faster than the FuryX in the ashes benchmark, so based on the info available today the 980ti still gets my vote

We'll see. The only thing it even affects is VR and that's only if you're sensitive to latency issues. I'm not as I don't have any issues with my Gear VR and Note 4. The GTX 980 ti performs just as well as the Fury X even without proper Async support (which maxwell 2 does support btw; it is only the scheduling that is going to be software-based) and that's going to get better as Nvidia sets their sights on DX12. For DX11 the 980 ti slaughters the Fury X.

£550 is a healthy budget and you came to an enthusiast forum for help, so I say why wait, get a 980ti. :)
Can always sell it if next years is that good, so keep the box.

If you are worried about wasting £550 then you dont have a lot of money to spend I imagine ? If you are budget conscious I'd go down the AMD road. Remember you get what you pay for though.

From experience, you're also less likely to have issues with the 980Ti compared to the AMD equivalents (not that there are many)
