Upcoming FreeSync monitors

From past experience, new stuff coming to EU area will usually cost pretty much the same in pounds as it does in dollars. So even after taxes and exchange rates, there's still a premium. After a while it will balance itself a little, but in EU we usually indeed have a longer and more expensive "early adopter"-phase.

But indeed, the exchange rates have somewhat fluctuated in the past year, so remains to be seen what's the situation after a few months.

edit: Whoa, there was only one reply in this page when I started typing and checking the rates...

I know, and because of that, the US prices are listed without tax.

So the $800 for the swift, is before tax. So I'm not sure what your point is?

Just saying UK price of the swift is just the US base price + our tax rate + a small mark up, so wouldn't be shocked to see the same for this.

My point is RRP usually includes TAX and retail mark-up.

id wait on some reviews first,
im surprised no one else has mentioned the massive bleed you can see on that screen, and that's in a lit room, and a screen that asus picked to go to the biggest show
you would think that wouldn't even be a bad sample!

PCM2 is going to be busy this year! :o

Yeah and I added UK tax the converted swift base price. I am not going to pick a random US tax rate to add to the $800 before coverting it.

UK swift price is the US base price + TAX and then a small mark up. So I think ASUS will follow the same for this new monitor.

Not sure why you take such issue with it, or want me to take US tax into account

Given the extreme angle that the camera is shooting from, it is far more likely to be IPS glow which is a trait of IPS screens, no other IPS display is any different and it is only something that is mostly evident on darker images.

Also, cameras always make bleed/glow look far worse than in "real life" due to them usually over exposing everything.

I would take that over the washed out look/contrast shift you get with TN any day :p

i duno im not use to seeing it that bad in a lit room!
it could be the camera/angle i guess, just doesn't fill me with confidence lol

We can't really pin down a price either way. Right now $600 RRP is £400 directly including US TAX rates and Profit margins. So if you buy a screen at retail price from the US and resell it then it would be £400 plus VAT and Duty.

Right now, the ROG is £650 from OcUK but in the states its $799. So if we use that calculation, this new Asus screen would come in at around £310 retail.

Erm, no, it works out to 500 using the same %

lol ask matt he has more of them than me! :(

any these screens you excited on?

Oh yes. I'm vaguely excited about all of the FreeSync models, but particularly interested in the ASUS MG279Q. Also some of Samsung's 4K ones could be good fun. :)

Out of idle curiosity PCM how many hours does it normally take you to do a thorough review on a new monitor?

I have no idea. I do bits and pieces when I can over a period of a few weeks, usually. I also passively review (i.e. use the monitor) for a significant chunk of that time and sometimes beyond. It is very time consuming but I also really enjoy it.

Ah fair enough, don't think you'll be getting much spare time over the next few more the then :) Are you in the process of reviewing anything at the moment?

That's very true. Just finished reviewing the Dell P2415Q and now moving onto the ASUS PB279Q. When that's finished I'll be looking at reviewing models like the U3415W, U2515H, S34E790C, XB270HU, BDM4065UC and whatever else is available at the time. I won't be rushing to review the FreeSync models until I have myself a decent AMD GPU to do so. Which could be when the 390x is released.

Ah that's a shame as they're the ones I'm most interested in :) Oh well I'll probably want to wait for prices to settle and issues to be found rather than rushing into a purchase anyway so hopefully you'll have had time to review them by then.
