The title explains most of this.

I ordered a new work-horse, with the following mobo and CPU:

MSI 870A-G54
AMD PHENOM II X4 840

The mobo requires a BIOS update for the CPU. I have a 965 in my computer now, but I don't have any more thermal paste stuff.

Would I be able to boot into Windows with the 840, or am I going to have to tear out my 965?

Thanks in advance!

I ran into this problem myself last year different cpu/MB and sadly was unable to boot my pc with the new cpu.

Leave yer old cpu in update bios then switch them over thats how I did it and if you have not tried to install the 840 (does that not come with a heatsink and fan with past pre applied)?.

Can I ask as to why you want the 840 installed other than the 965?

The 965 is faster and is unlocked multi.
