Update jailbroken iOS 4.3.5 to 5

I have an iPhone 4 that is running a redsn0w tethered jailbreak on iOS 4.3.5, I never bothered to update to iOS 5 when it came out but would like to upgrade now.

What are my upgrade options? Can I just plug the phone in and update to iOS 5 through iTunes without bricking it? (I know I will loose my jailbreak if I do this).

Any other options, maybe I could upgrade straight to a jailbroken iOS 5?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Just plug it into itunes and update to 5.1.1 then download Absinthe jailbreak from redmond pie and re-jailbreak your phone.

If you do a backup on itunes and restore from backup before re-jailbreaking you should not loose any data either.

Cheers, sounds much easier than I expected! I thought I might end up bricking it by updating it straight through iTunes haha.

To be honest you can't really brick an iPhone. Most of the time it will put itself into recovery mode.

All done, I tried to upgrade to 5.1.1 through iTunes and it threw an error up half way through and went into recovery mode. I had to Restore it to factory settings which installed a fresh 5.1.1 and then I had to restore from my backup which I ensured I made before starting (and double and triple checked).

I am now up and running on a untethered jailbroken 5.1.1
