Beeing on the "normal" or old TVs (CRT) ive lost track, but I do know, LCD is the way to go at the moment, forget plasma! its soo last week :p

but, Analogue will be cut off and these lcds are all analogue

im confused to whats going on

I am thinking of replacing my TV and get a HD Ready LCD to save space and ready for the HD upgrade, but they all seem to be "LCD TVs with PC input" cant u buy just a normal TV these days? just flat panel? (LCD)

im so confused by all this, im so behind the times...

Hi as long as you look for an lcd tv and not a moniter it will be able to show tv via an areial ect.
However some tvs have built in freeview which allows you to watch freeview (digital ) channels without a setop box just plug in an areial an bingo more channels.

when analogue switches off in 2010 (i think) then your tv will need built in free view or if not you will need a setopbox which you can get dirt cheap sub £20 from most places
hope his helps

Think again, plasma is not 'so last week', infact, plasma has the definite edge on the Tv side of things, a far superior image quality than LCD, , i would have gone plasma for definite if i never intended on plugging my PC into my telly but i did so i went LCD, LCD's for SD are pretty sketchy, especially for the likes of football, image quality is pretty crap tbh, the players are pixellated for a start. However, when you run to HD, then the quality is VERY good, but still not as good as plasma, plasma has much better blacks than LCD's, though LCD's are getting better.

So basically, for TV plasma >LCD
for PC connectivity, LCD > Plasma.

(the above is my opinion and some may disagree.

Also depends on the size of the telly, I'd love a plasma but only being able to have a 32inch tv I'm going ot have to buy an LCD.

Quite interested in this LCD v Plasma debate as I have another thread open at the moment asking for a TV between £600-£700 and I've been suggested mostly LCD.

Baring in mind that 98% of the TV will mostly be SD and aparently Plasma is "better" at SD and also for sizes over 32" shouldn't ths be what I'm aiming for?

New TV's are so confusing :p

LCD can look good with SD, I had a 42" Sharp XD1, using a PC for SD scaling and DVD player with 1080p scaling. Someone else owned this set and a plasma, and said the LCD has better blacks. Picture was superb with DVD's though. This set had other problems, some ghosting with certain colours/greyscales, only noticeable on certain sequences...rare but annoying when it does show up.

Plasmas can get screenburn, you can get uneven contrast between the widescreen borders and the rest of the image (the actual image is more worn out than the black borders) also don't forget dogs or other logos.

Also you can't get true HD plasma's, if you're looking into HD-DVD/Blu Ray and use a Plasma the screen will downscale to fit.

You can get TRUE-HD plasmas. Pioneer do one and a m8 has one (was defi real ;) ) Panasonic are about to release one.

The guy must have had a rubbish plasma, the Sharp doesnt have good blacks for an LCD - a good plasma walks every LCD for black level and tha will prolly not change until LCD is superceeded.

Screenburn is non existent in reality - LCD can also get it again in reality they dont, screen retention you may get but again the top brands dont generally get it (Pioneer had a dodgy batch but are over it) My screen is on all the time, dogs, borders, game huds etc etc and it has never had retetion. Having said that i wouldnt hook a pc to a plasma to use as a main screen - defi LCD for that.

Pioneer got the first true 1080p plasma, at 50inch, Panasonic's 10th generation panel will be the first 1080p set starting at the smaller 42inch size. I believe the Panny will be cheaper than the Pioneer, but still a lot more expensive than a 720p (1024x768) plasma.

But resolution isnt everything, a 1024x768 plasma can still give stunning results fed a full HD signal, their blacks and contrast are virtually impossible to beat, dimming the backlight on an LCD may give a higher contrast 'statistic' but it crushes detail level. Plasma has full available contrast without crushing black detail. Its also less 'artificial' looking.

Forget the 'lesser' brand names though with plasma, I wouldnt touch anything less than a Panasonic, or Pioneer.

LCD does give more choice, but personally, I find LCD TV's virtually unwatchable.
