I'll be keeping an even more watchful eye on things in the future but it's certainly crossed my mind in the past that some things I've received haven't quite been as I'd expect in terms of the appearance of the packaging though I've always put that down to things either spending hours/days/weeks in transit or some berk being a tad slapdash at the packing stage in the factory.
Any Apple products that are returned under DSR are returned to Apple Distribution Center, cleaned up, erased back to factory standards, put back in a box with all the original accessories, re-sealed and sent back to the shop as new. The retailer doesn't lose out on anything.
If there's a mark that won't clean off easily then it gets sent back to China to have that particular part replaced so it's in a "new" condition.
