I updated Ubuntu 9.10, restarted, got as for as the logo screen then my pc just reboots.

This is the second time its done this now. The first time I had to reinstall ubuntu, this time I want to fix it.

I am running the LIVE CD just now btw.

Can someone please help me. How can I fix this?

yo rob. Maybe it's time to download the 10.04 ubuntu beta.

When I was new to linux I often found that using a beta (it's out soon anyway) would fix my issues :p

Found this post on the ubuntu forums, maybe this will work.

This has just cropped up on my PC too, was hanging on bootup just before the login screen (slim). Wouldn't work in recovery mode, told me about the nmbd pid but wouldn't let me do anything about it so CTRL-ALT-DEL was necessary.

Found that by removing quiet and splash from the grub boot entry I could boot up OK again

how do I remove quiet and splash?

If all else fails, I'll install 10.04. I just hate not being able to fix things. Always means if this happens again the future, I'm screwed again.

Wait for debian/ubuntu people to post. I haven't used ubuntu in a long time and I think they use grub2, which I'm not familiar with and I don't wanna break your system lol.

bah, forgot it. I'm installing 10.04.

I'd just like to know why it isn't booting after I applied the update. I am really do not want to go back to windows but I have came across problems like this a lot now.

Weird, an "update" should run with no problems; unlike an "upgrade" which is fetching beta packages off Lucid repositories (incomplete if done at the wrong time of the day as it is constantly being fed).

What Oxy said should reveal the cause.

I am on 10.04 at the moment, it is excellent :D

I considered Windows the other day actually but like you don't really want to go back and have too been having problems.

I'm still not 100% settled on particular distro. Am using linuxmint which I believe it a tweaked version of Ubuntu... am getting on with it quite nicely.

I distro hopped for 5 years lol. Now settled on Arch linux.

Yeah, I think I used Arch Linux for about a year and decided to change. It broke after I updated it so I just tried something else. It used to keep dropping my network connection too, along with most other distros actually, curse this ralink card.

Installed 10.04 and everything is fine now. It even boots really fast. 9.10 seemed to hang when booting for some reason.

Really liking the changes in 10.04 over 9.10,

I really hate using my other pc now as it is using windows 7. I still need to keep W7 on that pc for some things though.

Ok, one thing really annoying me in 10.04 is the minimize/maximize/close buttons for applications is moved to the top left instead of the top right.

How do I move these to the right? This is mind boggling as to why they would move them to the left.

I had the a similar problem a while back and IIRC it was something to do with the update manager asking you to reboot before it had finished, i think. I just reinstalled as i had it in a VM and hadn't used it that much.
