Somehow my old XP PC has changed the automatic updates to do 'automatically download updates and install them' without me knowing.

I like to see what the updates are first, is there a way like on vista where you can see what updates you have downloaded before you install them?

Yes, if you go to Control Panel > System.
Navigate to the Automatic Updates tab, then choose either the "Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them" or the "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them".

If that doesn't help the problem, your best bet is to disable automatic updates completely, and manually check using Microsoft / Windows Update.

Yer thanks, but can is there a way of viewing the updates that windows has already download without me knowing? Each time I try and shutdown windows wants me to install the updates, but I want to see what they are first if I can.

To see which updates you have already installed, Open Microsoft / Windows Update, and on the left hand navigation frame, choose "Review your update history".

AFAIK, you can't actually choose updates as smoothly as Vista's Windows Update. It's a shame really, I was hoping it would have been included with Service Pack 3.
