Do they actually improve the performance of the card or just have more features for you to twiddle with? I was just wondering if its worth it to upgrade my ATI 4870 which has the drivers from December last year
 
they typically improve performance in titles that have been released since the last driver set.

Gains of 15%+ can be seen in some cases.

As a general rule, always run the latest official release drivers and you'll be covered
