Hey guys

I am due to update my rig and was wondering if I could get your input.

After some research, I understand that my i5 2500K is still good and therefore I should (in principal) be able to retain it. I have detailed some of the key parts of my rig below:

- Gnward GeForce GTX 580 "GOOD Edition"
- Intel Core i5 2500K
- Asus P8Z68-V Pro MB (http://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/P8Z68V_PRO/)
- Noctua NH-D14 Dual Radiator CPU Cooler
- Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (got two in total, so 8GB)
- Windows 7
- Thermaltake 850w PSU (http://www.thinkcomputers.org/old/?x=reviews&id=855)

I plan to get two 970s in Sli and also the Asus ROC (1440p 144hz gsync one). I wanted to check whether:

(a) My CPU will be fine (oc’d to 4.5)
(b) My RAM (both speed and amount) will be fine
(c) There are any other potential issues or areas to improve

Thanks for all your help and comments in advance!

Neil

Hi,

Yes you should keep the CPU.

The RAM you can keep.

If you dont have an SSD then get one.

As above :)

I had the 2500k running at 4.5ghz with 8gb RAM, SSD and a 290 and no complaints what so ever. I only upgraded to the 2600k as my brother needed and i5.

As said above, your plan is solid. Just make sure your case has a decent air flow to cool those GPUs.

To echo, if you haven't got an SSD yet, now is the time to get one.

Hi guys. Thanks for the responses.

Just to address some of the queries:

- I have a SDD for the Windows 7 (games run off a HDD).
- I have a brand new case with great air flow, so will not be an issue.
- CPU is oc'd to 4.5ghz
- I am aware of the 3.5gb vram controversey; I imagined that it would be less of an issue given that I would have sli and plus 3.5gb surely isn't bad itself.

Your not running 8gb vram btw! Its still going to be 4gb so it will still affect you depending on the games you're playing.

Thanks Snips.

I really wasn't sure how Sli played a role in Vram usage. With that said, are people regarding this as a 'deal breaker'? 3.5gb sure seems great compared to 1.5gb on my 580. Surely the same principle would apply if we find a game needing 4.5gb and the 980 limited to 4gb?

I had originally thought about the 980, but the price/performance for 970 Sli seemed too good to pass up!

I think it's the fact its a '4GB' card which only uses 3.5gb, whereas the the 980, 290 and 290X all use the full 4GB. Shouldn't matter too much but its worth knowing about. Its more important for 4k as VRAM is used a lot at that resolution.
