I am updating my desktop, running DFI SLI-d with AMD 4400 X2 at the moment, well its stripped down. Would a Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-128-IN), be a better option? I have just bought the HIS ATI Radeon X1900 XT ICEQ 3 SILENT Heatpipe 512MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-053-HT), for graphics, first time I have used ATI for awhile. Do I go Conroe or stick with my AMD dual core 4400???

just gonna be using it for gaming or do you encode a lot?

If its just a gaming/general use PC with the odd bit of encoding i would say there is no point. If you do a lot of encoding you will notice a difference.

However, is it worth it?
You will need a new mobo, ram AND cpu. That is a lot of money for an upgrade that will not see much of an increase in speed in every day tasks. As said, encoding is a bit of an exception.

I agree with the above. Core Duo will be quite a bit quicker but would it be enough to justify the cost? Also hang on for better revision motherboards, etc.

I'm waiting for quad core. They'll be out after christmas and will cost similar to core 2 duo. I'm so tempted to upgrade to core 2 duo, but I may as well wait until after christmas.

You should really wait about 6 Months then think about upgrading as the new DX10 Cards will be out soon and the new quad core from intel. Its just not worth the upgrade just yet.
