Hi All,

A friend is looking to buy new motherboard, cpu and RAM as previous board has died. Only has a budget of around £300-350.

He mainly plays WoW and League if that helps at all. (Has PSU, a 960, case etc)

I've been out of the hardware world for a while and not sure where to point him!

Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

IMO better to have 6 cores than 16gb of memoy so 377.43 :D
can ryzen still be o/c on b350 mb?

Yes, will hit same speeds pretty much as x370 boards. Stock air cooler should hit 3.7/8ghz
Can go for full ATX version for that board for £101 instead of £88
For games he plays, 8GB will be fine

Intel option i3 , which is now 4 cores and 4 threads and no longer 2 cores 4 threads , also £20 steam voucher
4.8ghz of should hit Ryzen 1600 performance, in gaming

how bad would it be to have a single 8gb stick .. only single channel . but not sure that is so terrible. Then next year around jun 2018 memory prices will have halved? no?

it will cripply performance , specially on 6/7/8th gens - well Alienware ship their laptops with single stick 8GB i never know- friend was asking me why his frame rates would shoot from 140 to 40 and all over the place, slapped in extra stick for dual and performance was stable

I assume ryzen would be worse

prices wont half - your forgetting now products like Iphone and Galaxy's are using DDR4, samsungs SSDs next year will use them, so will tablets and laptops no installing them. the demand is HUGE! it may drop a little in price but wont but cut in half. didn't help tons and tons of wafer was scrapped 2016 i think due to a massive manufacturing defect - taking about a Yearly Quarter of materials wasted

Should go for the 1600 with a budget of £400 you can grab a nice set of ram and give the system a decent clock to get that little bit extra performance.

Thanks you!

I think he's going to go with the £377 one, just wanted to double check something with you, on the MB page it says "DDR4-RAM at up to 2.666 MHz" but the RAM you recommended is 3200mhz, are these compatible?

yes- its the ram we all pretty much recommend when spec with ryzen- because it works, specially at the start! jesus that was a nightmare! just enable XMP in the bios :) should work 80% without any changes- just make sure BIOS is updated first!!!

its a bit like intel, they state the speed JDEC or what ever the memory group first develops the kit at- then ram makers and board makers push things higher for performance and sales!
again thats an mATX board, might look a bit funny in full ATX case - if he's a bit OCD , the ATX version is £101

shame, the 16GB ram was £105 about two weeks ago- they were flying off the shelf
