If you can re-use most parts and go for a cpu+mobo+RAM upgrade then I would take a look at the FX-8320.
I did this and came from a similar era of system and have seen great performance. If you go beyond the £500 theres always intel but I think your budget would lie in the AMD route.

The i3's are not as good as the equivalent price AMD FX chips.
