Upgrade 6990 to .... or not ?

Tempted by the dip in prices for both NV and AMD cards.

I currently have a 6990, with [email protected] - 16gb ram, PSU OCZ 1250W, ZX68X-UD4-B3 - Rev 1.0.

I tend to play racing games / flight sims (iRacing, rFactor 2 & Rise of Flight) on triple screens 5760 x 1080 60hz - but dabble with other big titles like Bioshock Infinite, BF3 and BF4 etc etc.

Triple screens works well with the racing games - iRacing in particular is very smooth - frame cap 129 fps on triple screens but rF2 is a bit stuttery and requires tweaking. Assetto Corsa is coming out soonish too.

So to the question .... Do I opt for 2x7950 or a 7990 now given their higher VRAM and memory bus compared to 6990 ? Looks to be almost twice as quick looking at the benchmarks which is my usual rule of thumb for a an upgrade. Had the system for over 2 years (from here) and should be able to recoup something for 6990 (around £200+ ?).

That said it's not bad in the games I play in triple screens but a boost is always welcome.

I am also slightly hesitant that whilst the 6990 has been great - crossfire has required a lot of tweaking over the past couple of years to avoid microstutter at triple screen resolution - hurrah for radeonpro ! Hopefully, the strides in frame pacing will quickly be rolled out to triple screens too.

IF I'm persuaded it's worth the jump then the issue will be 7990 v 7950x2 - I have a Gigabyte zx68x-UD4-b3 board which I think will do 8x/8x in crossfire ?

Was tempted to try NV this time around by 760 or 670 sli but Do not seem so suited to triple screens given lower VRAM and lower memory bus speed.

So is it worth the jump now at current prices or wait to see if frame pacing comes to triple screens and see what AMD release over the next few months ?

Cheers
