My beloved 9800 gx2 is dieing even tho its been under water its entire life, was looking at replacing it with 2 4890s as i cant afford to bbuy a 5 serries ati card yet and the 4890s would be 1 at a time also but as they are cheap now thought would be a good option.

Also i game at 1920 x 1200 and like to see the effects and my motherboard supports xfire, from this i have a few questions

1) does 8x 8x xfire make much difference to them not being 16x 16 x ?

2) would the 4890s be a good buy or would it be best tpo wait for the 5 series to drop in price ?

8x xfire will make nearly no difference its inconsequential.

Two 4890s will be quicker than a 5870 though will rely on multi gpu scaling. Depends how cheap you can get them as they seem to be quite rare now.

Why you guys recommending old tech when 2 X 5770 is right up there for performance. Yeh 2 X 4890 is quicker but a few frames dont outweigh the advantages of the new tech, far less power, heat etc. Plus when the guy goes crossfire he'll have Dx11 to play with. Plus 4890 price is creeping up as they get rarer, one sold for £120 the other day.
Money is better spent on new tech in my opnion.:)

i was thinking 4890s would be better at scaling than 5770s, plus they might be old tech but they are still quicker, going to read that thread now, thaks for your help, anyone else think that the 5770s will be a better buy ?

The advantage with the 5770's is obviously the use of dx11, but it's in its infancy at the moment. I still think, as long as you can find them for an acceptably low cost, then two 4890's would be my first choice. Although you can overclock the 5770's to near 4890 performance, however, this is not a guarrantee for each card and on top of that you can then overclock the 4890's further still.

The way I see it the 5770's do Dx9,10,11 and there's gonna be more Dx11 games out soon enough especially with Nvidia finally brining Dx11 to the table. Why deny yourself the latest and best tech for the sake of a few Fps. Lets face it the frame rates wont be a problem so why do you need a few more. Just my thoughts.:)
