Upgrade advice; 4k vs 1440p 144Hz

Evening chaps! With the imminent purchase of a GTX 1080 my new build will be finally complete after months of deliberating!

Come "Black Friday" I am toying with the idea of treating myself to a new monitor. I currently have a Samsung BX2450. It's been with me for years and it's excellent. My dilemma is which upgrade path to choose; there doesn't seem to be any 4k monitors that have a refresh rate above 60hz at the moment, which would lead me to think it wouldn't actually be worth upgrading simply for the extra resolution(?). A 1440p screen at 144Hz seems like the happy medium whilst also providing a buttery smooth experience.

Are 4k monitors with high refresh rates around the corner or would they simply be too expensive at the moment? What's the general consensus on this matter? I can't be the only one who's had this predicament recently. I wonder if I'd regret not going 4k?

I hope this makes sense as I have a tendency to simply think out loud when I post here and let the more intelligent and knowledgeable members correct me.

Thank you!

4k for desktop use (as Windows scaling is still poop) will be smallish on a smaller screen so ideally 32+" and a 1080 may not do well in many 4k games unless you dial down settings and more so in future games.

Single card 4k is still not here.

Having had a multitude of 4k and 1440p 144Hz (and more) monitors over this last couple of years I'd certainly say 1440p with a high refresh is where the sweet spot is atm, the perfect balance :) (well, other than UW at 100Hz which I have lol)

Forget 4k for gaming. 1440, or even 1080 ultrawide 120-160hz (VA panel) if you want performance and image quality for sensible price.

There's not really a specific budget, just don't want to spend unnecessary money. I've a 24inch at the moment but I'm happy to go up to a 32inch. But as we're always so close our screens, that seems a bit of an overkill for PC gaming. Is 27 regarded as a happy medium?

I don't think 1440p monitors go any bigger than 27 inch unless you go ultrawide.
