Upgrade advice for 660ti

I am thinking of upgrading my 660ti. I am a full time carer so budget is limited and hence I am looking for something 2nd hand. Max spend is probably around £120.

I want something with at least 4GB ram as I ran into problems with Elite as my card only has 2GB. The rest of my system is pretty basic; i3 (probably look to upgrade to i5), 550W psu.

From what I have read so far it would seem that I should be looking for an Nvidia 970 or ATI 290? Any thoughts on this? Anything else I should look at? Pros and cons of the 2 chips?

Neither is a horrible choice, but the R9 290(X)s in particular are great value these days. I've seen them go for around the £100 mark in the Members Market. Just avoid the reference card with the blower-style cooler.

Reading into a bit more I am a bit concerned with the r290 power draw. It seems to need a lot more than the 970. Although as I will only be running at 1080p I suppose it probably won't be running at full tilt anyway.

it would also only just fit in my case.
