I was a manic upgrader and PC builder but managed to kick the habit a few years ago!
looking for some advice on upgrading - current system is:
Intel i7-4790K @4.00GHZ....should I keep this? (seems OK?)
16Gb ram
Graphics card -Radeon R9 380....I want a better card for gaming? (budget £300)

I use the system for Video/ music production and gaming

Thanks

Quad core (with ever growing amount of vulnerabilities and performance nibbling security patches) isn't that great for gaming and especially some video encoding can hog cores/threads like corrupt bankers and CEOs suck society dry.
But it's not such slow that there would be sense to buy new CPU before Zen2 Ryzens are in shops and situation stabilized.

Navi cards might have release sooner than generally expected, their pricing might not be at that level.
While RX Vegas have notable discounts now.

Though those need quality PSU, at least if using stock "balanced" settings of Vega 64.
Use of in the end very small performance penalty Power save profile or manual undervolting can cut power draw by major amount.

As mentioned above there are new AMD CPUs coming very soon - meaning either price drops on current stuff, or better CPUs available for purchase.

I would upgrade your graphics card (and PSU if needed) first as the 4790k will hold its own for a little while longer. Especially if you bump those clocks up - you should be able to see 4.4-4.6GHz easily.

Thanks for the advice -I've bought a Vega 56 card and a new MSI 27" 144Hz monitor which is working great.
I still have an itchy finger to press buy on an Intel 990K bundle though!

Keep that itch at bay for month and you'll get 12core/24 thread for that money.
Besides having lot less security holes needing patching.
Intel has taken so many short cuts in their design that triangles made by them must be round.
