Upgrade advice for video workstation

Sounds decent. Do you think it'd be worthwhile going for a different cooler? Mainly just concerned about speeding up rendering.

Thanks for all your help everyone.

Do you think replacing the 400GB HDD I use for rendering to with a SSD would be worthwhile?

Thanks again guys. I went for a NH-D15.

I've replaced all my drives with Samsung 850 Pros or similar. I only have 3 6GBs ports on that board though, so probably need to change that at some point.

Can't overclock over 4.4GHz withought temps tipping over 80C however  1st time so might be making mistakes I guess...

Do you think GPU and RAM overclocking will help with video and animation work much?

Thanks!

Should be allright if it's not for a boot drive. And you've got enough other 6 GBPS ports already for booting from.

Just check the controller / driver support for your specific OS.

How many Samsung 850s? If you're going for max performance you might find RAIDing them helps. Perhaps putting a pair of them in a RAID 0 for your scratch space (NOT long term storage unless you have a totally separate backup procedure). Or even better, RAID 5 if you can allocate 3 (or more) disks.

A dedicated RAID card would be the best solution for this for two reasons: first because it makes the array more self-sufficient (not reliant on the mobo), and second because you're currently short on ports anyway!

Overclocking the RAM is unlikely to help much but the GPU might depending on its current usage. Check using GPU-Z or Afterburner if it gets maxed out at any point.

Thanks. I'll consider doing some RAID at some point, but don't think I have time right now. Someone advised me it's not massively worth it with SSDs for video work, but they might be wrong.

My setup is:
- 850 Pro 256GB on 6GBs port: project files/Footage.
- 850 Pro 256GB on 6GBs port: AE disk cache.
- 840 Pro 256GB on 3GBs port: OS/Apps.

And then I think I'll also get:
- 850 Pro 256GB on 3GBs port: Renders/output.

Actually the new 850 pro might be 512GB, in which case I'll use it for the project files/footage drive.

GPU overclocking requires running some software like MSI Afterburner at all times doesn't it? Hmm seems weird.
