Hi OC,

I've been contemplating updating my card for the last few months but really stuck in two minds and would love advice from people on here as its invaluable!

My current set up is;

i5 6500 3.2
Asus Strix B250F Motherboard
Asus Strix GeForce 1060 6GB
Kingston Fury 4GB DDR4 2400 x 2
Corsair CXM 650W ATX Power Supply
Samsung 860 Evo 250GB SSD x 2
Acer Predator Z271 144Hz Monitor
NZXT S340 White ATX case

I'm overall pretty happy with my set up - I'm a fairly casual gamer and can run most things pretty well in 1080p with the above. But am tempted to upgrade my GPU as feel my card is a bit outdated now. I only bought it a year ago but rushed into the decision and in hindsight should probably have gone for a 1070 or equivalent to future-proof me for a couple more years.

I've been taking a look at the Vega 64s which I think would be a decent upgrade, although my monitor is G-Sync so it would mean selling and replacing that.
Or if I can find a good deal on a 1080?

Just want some general advice on what options I have and if it is going to be worth the ££ to upgrade.

Thanks in advance!

if you wanted to push the higher frame rates you'd be looking at gtx 1070/ RTX 2060 to put that monitor to good use.

only limiting factor would be your CPU as its clock speed would hinder max performance of a more powerful card, though not to much with gtx 1070 . if you slapped in a 1080ti/2070 then you'd start to see the handicap at 1080p gaming

might find your happy to continue with the current set up you have to be honest , depends on the games you play

Cheers. I'm actually tempted now to sell my monitor and card and upgrade card and get a 1440p monitor. Am tempted by the new Radeon cards which come out in Feb.

if you were 60hz then yeah , sell it and grab 1440p 60/144hz monitor .

going 1440p would put more focus on GPU then the CPU freeing it up a bit

still think even slapping in rtz 2060 your CPU might not hit 100% usage just yet - specially if you set everything at ultra . but does depend on your games

in theory your rig is nice little machine, as you've noted gtx 1070 is a great card for 144hz gaming

Current monitor is 144hz but 1080p. I would like to upgrade to 1440p, with new monitor and card. I reckon I could get around £500 combined by selling my monitor and the 1060, which would go along way to replacing with a 1440p monitor and a new card (thinking go AMD card and a Freesync monitor)

Oh and as for games I play mostly PUBG / RoE / Day-Z / Football Manager / COD etc.

Have put monitor and GPU up for sale so will see how much I bring in and then I can look at new monitor and GPU.

Any recommendations on card?

depends how much you want to spend !

personally, could just grab second and i7 6700k/7700k for £150 if you get luck with bids and then RTX 2060 and keep that monitor ! 2060 is about the same power as 1070ti so could easily upscale in game to 1440p or play at 1080p with a much stronger and faster CPU

selling monitors second hand can be a bit tricky

Current monitor is a 1080p monitor so can't run 1440p. I would like to upgrade to 1440p.

I am considering a Vega 64 Sapphire Nitro. And then a budget 1440p monitor. Something like this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01H07F...ken=6sSlaWCFaGtIyLilYifrDw&tag=higgrogam0b-21

Was referring to ingame scaling - kind of what consoles do. Games like BFV you set your monitors resolution (1080p) and then game rendering resolution you like to play it at (1440p). Give textures/objects more defined look whilst taxing the GPU harder to give CPU some relief

get the Windforce, better RMA and PCB design . Nitro has a massive cooler and for a reason - VRMs get very hot. 7+1 vs 12+1 design of the Windforce

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £838.48 (includes shipping: £10.50)

that monitor you listed. only the 27" 144hz QHD is 1440p at £500. better monitors out there for same pricing .

Thanks - that's a good deal on the Windforce. Certainly something to consider. I read the Sapphire was the best 64 on the market, but it is chunky. Do you reckon my CPU and PSU will be ok to run this card?

luckily your i5 doesn't eat a lot of power, specially since it cant be overclocked so should be okay, and its not a bad rated unit.
worth undervolting the Vega 64 to save some power and heat.

Yeah, its got a good read up due to its Cooler . Less VRM the more heat its puts out and quicker to throttle - ways to combat this is more VRMs or beefier cooling

should have power heat and noise on later pages, vega 56 is about 5c cooler then what 64 would be

Couldn't resist the Nitro at the £399 price with the free 3 games so took the plunge. Arrives tomorrow! May need to upgrade my PSU though as I have a feeling my current 650w will struggle.

Will be running;

CPU
  • -Core i5-6500 3.2 GHz Quad-Core
MOTHERBOARD
  • -PRIME B250-PLUS ATX LGA1151
MEMORY
  • -FURY 4 GB (1 x 4 GB) DDR4-2400
  • -FURY 4 GB (1 x 4 GB) DDR4-2400
STORAGE
  • Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB SSD
  • Samsung 860 EVO 250 GB SSD
VIDEO CARD
  • Radeon RX VEGA 64 8 GB NITRO+
CASE
  • S340 (White) ATX Mid Tower
POWER SUPPLY
  • -CXM 650 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX

Now just need to find a decently priced 1440p / 144hz monitor!
