Hi guys

I use my PC for:

1) rendering 3D images
2) Gaming FPS BF4
3) Gaming Sins of the solar empire
4) loads of other stuff but not that demanding so not going to list them
5) Watching HD films

You can see from my Signature my current system on Windows 7.

I have £500 to spend.

How should I spend it and on what to get better performance?

Your current GPU is fine as is your PSU so I'd be looking at a motherboard / CPU/ RAM upgrade.

Nice one Ted, I think I will go for that TBH.

What sort of CPU heatsink would you recommend that will be man enough to cope with the heat?

If you're getting a new cooler I'd recommend different RAM really - that Kingston stuff has high profile heat spreaders which can be a pain to fit under the cooler. If you have a bit more than £500 then get this RAM and then any of the coolers listed will work well. I have them both in my systems at home - my preference is the Matterhorn for ease of installation, but they're both very good coolers for the money.

If you're set on that RAM then try and find a Thermalright True Spirit 140 cooler as it will fit the RAM and is a reasonable price. OCUK sell them but it's currently out of stock

Splendid, thanks again for your help mate. :)

Hi, just noticed your CPU is at stock overclocking it to 4.00 to 4.2GHz would be good.

Giving you time to see how X99 performs plus save up more money thats if your not in a hurry to upgrade.

Hi Oldphart, I really need to change that. It is actually overclocked to 3.2GHz which I did with some software that came bundled with the MB.

Originally the MB and CPU were part of a bundle that overclockers had pre overclocked up to I think 4.2GHz. Can't remember for sure.

However, I found it to be unstable when gaming and kept getting the BSOD.

In the end I just dialled it back a bit using the software which sorts all the settings out automatically and left it at that.

For the most part my PC has more or less achieved what I needed it to but I am bit of a graphics fiend and if there is a higher setting available and I can't have it set to that and I know it looks better at that setting it frustrates a little.

At the end of August I am hoping to have around £600.00 spare for reasons I wont bore you with but I thought it would be a good opportunity to upgrade and have a machine that should give me what I want for the next few years.

I do really want to go down the SSD route for my primary drive so I may have to wait another month to afford it.

I'll see how the finances look when I get paid. I'm already getting shiney new kit syndrome and I haven't even bought it yet LOL

In all honesty overclocking really worries me. I have looked into it in the past and put a lot of effort into trying to understand how to get that balance between voltages etc.
I still don't really get it.

I am under the impression the more modern motherboards now make it easier so I may have another look into it if need be.

Thanks again everyone. You guys are always so helpful and it gives me the confidence to make sure I am going down the right road with my purchases.
