Hello there,

I've bought a PC at OcUK some time ago and I think it is time for some upgrades as I have difficulties with running new games smoothly. I am a newbie if it comes to hardware so I want to ask you what should I be upgrading and what should be prioritised. In my opinion first in line would be a CPU then motherboard and maybe we could leave GPU as it is for now.

I'll post name of these components that I have now below.

CPU:
Intel Pentium G3258
GPU:
GeForce GTX 1060 3GB
Motherboard:
MSI Z97 PC Mate

I've done some research and I think that my motherboard can't support top end CPU, I might be wrong. Sorry. If you need any more information on my hardware, just let me know.
The budget I am planning to spend is from £500 to £600.

Thanks for your help!

I would definitely go with an upgrade to DDR4 platform to give your system that needed boost... You already have a decent GPU for 1080p gaming, for your budget you could get a nice new CPU/RAM/Motherboard setup....

What PSU do you have?
What storage devices do you have?

Hi there,

The maximum CPU that you can use with your motherboard is the i7 5775C which is not a bad CPU.
But the thing is that they probably sell quite expensive.

Thanks for quick response guys,

Storage devices:
Seagate BarraCuda 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache HDD
Samsung 120GB 750 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps Solid State Drive

PSU:
Cougar VTX 450W 80 Plus.

Drop in an i7 4770/4770K/4790/4790K if you can get one at a good price, and you'll relieve the huge bottle neck that is your CPU, no need to change everything. The Pentium G you have is only 2 cores/2 threads, and means your graphics card cannot work correctly, the i7's listed above have 4 cores/8 threads, and will let your graphics card perform how it was meant to.

Next time you come to changing your graphics card, in 12/18/24/36 months time, then you'll need to change the platform. :)

EDIT: Oh, and this will cost you £150 at most.
Double EDIT: I just checked the famous auction site, and you can buy an Dell Optiplex 9020 Tower, with an i7 4770 fitted for £220 with free delivery. You could nick the CPU from this, pop it in your board, then put your old CPU in that system, and sell it on for about £150, the systems are really well specified, and would sell fast. Total cost to you about £70, and a bit of labour, but your frame rates will be much, much better.

Hi Tobiano and welcome to the forums :)

No, the fastest would be the i7-4790K, if you can afford one.

To be honest I'd probably stick with the i5-4690K - again if you can find one at a decent price. Whilst games are making use of more cores now the i5 is a good workhorse with great single threaded performance that would go well with the rest of your system.

See the supported CPU list here. Find yourself an i7-4770K or 4790K, get a good CPU cooler and overclock it. Should be around £150 for an i7-4770K CPU. Make sure you do a BIOS update first.

Budget Intel , B chip so not overclockable but 6 cores at 3.9ghz and we'll pretty much do well for gaming . But still under i7 K older gens for gaming

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Cheapest i7 8700k build - MSI board out of stock . Bare in mind no cooler ! You'll need a good one to ..
Only 8 GB of budget ram to :(

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £511.97 (includes shipping: £0.00)

Ryzen, cracking value for money but still a little slower then 3rd gen plus i7 K chips for Gaming..

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £471.47 (includes shipping: £10.50)

As above, journey has done a cracking plan for landing a i7 4*** for cheaper then any of the above with potential to get cash back

If you want to save cash , Def go with getting a second hand i7 4*** chip
